What is Athletes Foot?
Athletes foot is a harmless fungal infection of the skin on the feet. It is more common in hot humid weather and is more common in men and is usually persistent.
Symptoms of Athletes Foot
- Soles and sides of the feet itch, redden, scale and tiny blisters start appearing.
- Skin between the toes start scaling and peeling.
- If toe nails are infected, they begin to thicken, lose color, scale and crumble
- In severe cases, the skin between the toes become soft, cracks and is painful.
Causes of Athletes Foot
- Fungus that breeds in enclosed, moist, warm environment are responsible for athletes foot.
- Sweaty, damp socks and poorly ventilated shoes serve as breeding ground. Fragments of affected skin can spread fungus
Home remedies for Athletes Foot
- Treat the problem immediately with clotrimazole anti-fungal lotion or cream for 3 consecutive days.
- For the soles of the feet apply cream and for in between toes use lotion (as it is absorbed more quickly)..
How can one prevent Athletes Foot
- Allow your feet to breathe by wearing well-ventilated shoes. Wear socks that keep moisture away and change them regularly.
- Wipe your feet dry (especially between the toes) after washing them with soap and water. Then apply anti-fungal foot powder or lotion.
- Whenever possible go barefoot or wear sandals.
