What are Bursitis?
Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa (fluid filled sacs that protect muscles and tendons), which can be acute or chronically painful. Bunion is also a form of bursitis.
Symptoms of Bursitis
- When shoulder (the most common site is affected), neck and arms experience a radiating pain.
- The joint is painful and can be restrictedly moved.
- If there is an infection, it is accompanied by fever.
- Swelling in or around the joint and continuous irritating pain
Causes of Bursitis
- Injury, repetitive over exercising, hard work, unaccustomed activities that injure or put pressure on joint can be the cause.
- Bursitis of the knee occurs by continuous kneeling on the hard floor; Shoulder bursitis occurs due to serving in tennis.
- The other causes maybe infections, arthritis or gout.
Home remedies for Bursitis
- Use painkillers, to reduce swelling and pain.
- Bring down swelling by using ice packs for 2 days, then to ease pain use heating pad.
- Avoid massage, balms and liniments.
- Stop the activity that has caused the pain, rest and protect the affected area with a padding or sling.
- Gentle activities can be started, only after you feel better .
How can one prevent Bursitis
- Cushion your knees, take breaks and change positions if your task demands a lot of kneeling.
- When you play sports like tennis or golf, follow the right technique to avoid strain.
- Elbow-itis can be prevented by arranging the workspace with a chair having comfortable height.
- Mobility of the joint can be increased, by toning muscles with flexibility exercises.
- Shoes with improper fittings can cause bursitis of the heels, so avoid wearing them.
- If you are involved in physical labor take frequent breaks and avoid pushing yourself too hard for too long
