What is Cataract?
The lens of the eye that is colorless and clear becomes cloudy and opaque with age, damaging vision causing cataracts.
Symptoms of Cataract
- Dimming of vision or gradual painless blurring.
- In glaring lights (car headlights) or sunlight, vision is poor.
- Sometimes the impression of a film over the eyes.
- As cataract progresses the power to differentiate color reduces.
- In advanced cases the lens of the eyes has a cloudy appearance and the pupil turns milky white.
Causes of Cataract
- Age is the prime factor associated with cataracts.
- Other factors are exposure of UV light for a long time.
- Smoking and certain environmental factors that release highly reactive oxygen molecules
- Diabetes in younger people and corticosteroid medication for a long period.

How can one prevent Cataract?
You can only slow or minimize the impact of cataracts.
- Stay in the shade to the maximum possible. Outdoors use an umbrella, or wear a hat that can reduce glare.
- Quit smoking.
- Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables that are rich in Vitamin C and E and Beta-carotene.
- Wear UV protective sunglasses that are tinted, either amber, yellow or brown
