What is Constipation?
Hardening of the stools and straining during defecation, due to failure in having a bowel for 3 days or more is called constipation. However it is normal for a person to have a bowel movement once or twice a day, every alternate day or 3 times a week.
Symptoms of Constipation
- No bowel movement for 3 to 4 days.
- Swelling in the abdomen.
- Passing of small hard stools.
- Difficulty, strain and pain during passage of stools.
- Bowel movements are infrequent.
- Even after a bowel movement there is a continued sensation of fullness.
Causes of Constipation
- Common cause of constipation is a diet that lacks fiber. Fiber is said to absorb water and soften stool, adds bulk to it and causes contractions of the colon creating an urge to defecate.
- Lazy lifestyle, depression, emotional stress, insufficient intake of fluids, obsessive compulsive disorder, travel or changes in your daily routine, changes in regular toilet habits, ignoring the urge to defecate, laxative abuse are factors that affect constipation.
- Medications like antacids containing aluminum, diuretics, pain medication, calcium and iron supplements and antidepressants.
- Hormonal changes during pregnancy and medical conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, bowel disease, backache and kidney failure are also causes of constipation.
Constipation: Home remedies and Prevention
- Eat lots of legumes, fruits, vegetables and unprocessed grains that are rich in fiber. Figs, raisins and prunes are also effective. However excessive amounts can cause bloating and gas.
- The colons ability to contract is hindered by excessive use of laxatives. So use it sparingly.
- Abdominal muscles and pelvic floor muscles are strengthened by regular physical activity, and this helps in stimulating bowel movements.
- Drink fruit juice or at-least 8 glasses of water per day, this softens stools and makes it easier to pass.
- Defecate when the urge arises, though it maybe a little inconvenient for your routine
