What is Flatulence?
Intestinal gas that is expelled through the rectum is called flatulence. Typically an adult passes gas 15 to 20 times a day.
Symptoms of Flatulence
- Bloating and discomfort in the abdomen.
- Intestinal gas is passed from the rectum.
Causes of Flatulence
- When bacteria present in the large intestine ferment, incompletely digested carbohydrates (which are present in vegetables like cauliflower or Brussels-sprouts, beans and lentils) produce gases. Frequent swallowing, stress, carbonated beverages, lactose intolerance and celiac disorders also cause flatulence..
Home remedies for Flatulence
- Passage of food through gastrointestinal tract is slowed down by constipation (leads to fermentation). So drink plenty of fluids and eat fiber rich food.
- Chew food thoroughly so that lumps that ferment do not remain longer in the intestine.
- Antacid and anti-gas preparations are hardly effective so better avoid them.
- Eat moderate amounts of fiber rich food at first and then gradually increase the intake. Otherwise flatulence may increase. If these fiber-rich-food disturb your system, reduce or eliminate them from your diet.
- Artificial sweeteners can cause flatulence and diarrhea, so avoid it.
- Keep an eye on foods like cabbage, cauliflower, high-fiber foods, milk and milk products, soybeans and pink beans that are high in complex carbohydrates and produce intestinal gas.
- Soak beans 4 to 5 hours in water before cooking, as this will remove some of the water- soluble carbohydrates that cause gas.
