What is Frost Bite?
If you have been out in the cold for a while and your extremities feel cold and numb, means frostbite has set in. They can be classified into 3 categories:
- Frostnip – Numbness in the ears, nose, hands or feet and is followed by whitening of the tissue.
- Superficial Frostbite – The skin is hard on the surface and appears white and waxy.
- Deep Frostbite – Tissues can turn blotchy and blue, and will be very hard.
Symptoms of Frost Bite
- Hands, feet, ears or nose become cold and numb, skin whitens and then surface hardness.
- Skin becomes blotchy or blue and very hard. Blisters may also appear.
Causes of Frost Bite
- Frostbite occurs from exposure to cold weather.
- Occurrence of frostbite depends on the temperature, exposure-length and wind chill.
- Damp clothing, alcohol consumption, below-average body fat can increase risk factors..
Home remedies for Frost Bite
- If possible get out of the cold first.
- Alcoholic beverages should not be consumed.
- Frostbitten areas should never be rubbed or massaged and avoid ointments.
- For Frostnip – apply direct warmth by blowing on the areas. Your frost-nipped hands can be kept under warm armpits, and for nose apply warm hands. There may be a slightly tingly or burning sensation.
- For Superficial Frostbite – Immerse the affected part into comfortably warm (100 – 105degree Fahrenheit) water and keep replacing warm water when necessary. The process causes pain.
- For Deep Frostbite – Prevent bruising. Wrap the area in soft material or blanket and keep it elevated till you reach the hospital.
Preventing Frost Bite
- Dress appropriately, so that the outer layer is water and windproof. Wear proper footwear and cover face, nose and ears adequately. Instead of gloves wear heavy mittens.
- Keep away from smoking and alcoholic beverages.
- Loss of body heat can be slowed down, by applying a moisturizer while going out.
- Keep a sleeping bag or blanket in your car while traveling during winter. It helps to keep you warm.
- Skin temperature is lowered if petrol splashes on exposed skin, so be careful at petrol pumps.
- When the temperature falls below 20degree Fahrenheit, avoid going out.
