What is Genital Warts?
Genital warts is a sexually transmitted infection that is quite common. When a person is infected with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), One to eight months later, growths appear in, on and around the genitals. In few cases HPV can cause cancer of the penis and cervix.
Symptoms of Genital Warts
- Elevations of the skin, that is small, flat and hardly visible.
- Some warts are invisible to the naked eye.
- Irritation and itching, and soft flat irregular growths appear inside the vagina, in the urethra, on the cervix, top of the penis, around the anus and in the throat and mouth.
- The warts may increase in number and size.
Causes of Genital Warts
- Genital warts are caused by HPV. It is highly contagious.
- Sexual behavior in recent times, (sex with multiple partners and sexual activity at an earlier age) have increased infected numbers.

Preventing Genital Warts
- If one of the partner’s is infected then the other one should take care. Infection may recur, if only one from both the infected partners is treated.
- Make sure you use latex condoms.
- Women should go in for PAP tests.
- Medical assistance should be sought, if bumps, on or around the genitals appear.
