What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
I.B.S. is a common abdominal complaint linked with digestion, and develops in late adolescent or early adulthood. Food leaves the stomach and moves along the small and large intestine by wave like contraction and relaxation of the intestinal wall muscles. But when the muscles go into spasms the result is either diarrhea or constipation.
Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
- Nausea and gas.
- Feeling of an incomplete bowel movement.
- Bloating, belching, pain and severe to moderate abdominal cramps. Often pain is relieved after bowel movement.
- Under stressful conditions, during menstrual periods and after a big meal symptoms worsen.
- Diarrhea or constipation that lasts for days, weeks or months. Immediately after awakening in the morning or after a big meal symptoms worsen.
Causes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Physiological disorder or emotional stress, gas-producing foods like broccoli, beans and high-fat foods like margarine, bacon and vegetable oil may cause flare-ups. Inability to digest lactose (milk sugar) also produces the same symptoms.
