What is Lice?
They are flat parasites without wings, and live on the body and cause skin inflammation by biting and sucking blood.

The lice that affect humans are of 3 types –
- Head Lice – Scalp is extremely itchy, hair near the scalp has nits (eggs) and tiny insects are present behind the ears and at the base of the neck. In severe cases lymph glands enlarge at the back of the scalp.
- Body Lice – Buttocks and trunk exhibits red bites on the skin.
- Pubic (crab) Lice – uncomfortable or intense itching and scratching in the groin area.
Causes of Lice
They are transmitted in overcrowded or unhygienic environment. Head lice cause an outbreak when you share comb, hat, clothing or hairbrush. Pubic lice pass through sexual contact, lice-infected bedding or clothing. Body lice live in the seams of clothing, usually in people who do not change their clothes often.
Home based treatment for Lice
- Everyone should be inspected daily for lice.
- Pillowcases, blankets and sheets should be washed in extremely hot soapy water. Iron all clothing if possible. Seal clothes and toys (that cannot be washed) in a plastic bag securely for 3 weeks.
- For head lice and pubic lice medicated shampoo can be used, but only as per the instructions on the label.
- Use alcohol to soak and sanitize hairbrushes and combs.
- Nits that glue themselves to the hair should be thoroughly removed.
How to prevent Lice
- Inspect children regularly for head lice.
- Sex with infected people should be avoided.
- Combs and hairbrushes should not be shared.
- Bathe and shampoo on a daily basis.
- Be alert to other sources of infection like airline-theatre seats, car seats and head- rests.
